7. BIOGRAPHY
By Isabella Queiroz de Azevedo
Translated by Richard Mueller
(zapaq2000@hotmail.com)
////In the background, we can hear some the artist's works. This first one was produced by the artist himself for the North American singer Mariah Carey. To jump to the tracks it is easy enough by clicking below on the arrow on the player. You can see the curriculum, biography, photos, videos, contact and more in the links to the left in the inferior part of this page.////
The actor, producer and multi-instrumentalist Alan Oliveira was born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais in Brazil on August 27, 1978. From the words of his mother, Lucia Regina, “from a young age he demonstrated a taste for the arts as he strolled through the channels watching musical video clips”. Which is the one that she believes has helped to base his personality. One day I bought a toy machine-gun for Alan. He was have about six years old. The following day, when I arrived in the room, he was on top of the armchair, with the machine-gun hung around his shoulder with a string that he tied as a strap. He was faking that he was playing guitar while he imitated the artists on TV. On that day I noticed that the most appropriate gift would be a toy guitar... being he’s was a restless boy and very hyperactive, I went to the distance to buy him this guitar to calm him”.
At age seven, as a result of the end of his parents’ marriage, Alan decides to live with his mother in his aunt's house in the capital of Brazil, Brazilia (the Capital District). As this is, he encompasses his first contacts with the flute. In his adolescent cousins’ company, he found significant material of Renato Russo (L. Urbana), Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and other predominant personalities in the 1985 era.
After one year, he moves with his mother to the city of Planaltina and it helped to create his little sister (Andressa Ricco), that years later would become very influenced by the arts, and today is acting as actress on the stages of Brazil.
A little later, at age 10, Alan and his family move to Gyn in west central Brazil. With his tall stature for his age, he teams up with a basketball team and integrates into the Jockey Club. As such, he believes to be giving a start in a sporting career. During this time he meets “Sergin” which becomes a close friend to him. This marks Alan Oliveira’s musical course definitely due to his friend’s devotion to piano studies and musical styles like Bossa Nova, Jazz, Blues as well as harmony study and improvisation. With that the way it was, the dream of the NBA was interrupted and a great friendship began.
As Alan never frequented musical schools, he absorbed every bit of musical material with him autodidatic experience of all material that your friend lent to him.
Alan says that his friend’s house provided him with a wealth of knowledge and that the current Disco movement took him from Tom Jobim to Dave Brubeck. “It was really beautiful how harmonies were broken yet organized at the same time. All of those scales… First I discovered the secrets of “Garota de Ipenema” (Girl from Ipenema), next to “Wave” and later to “Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar” (I Know That I’ll Love You). It was a very good musical form, calculated and free at the same time. People who listen to my work today notice a little of those styles in my music. It’s becoming a little complicated bringing all of those complexities together in a musical moment today, but we are going to keep trying.”
At this time, Lucia decides to acquire a keyboard for her to learn. Taking advantage of the musical moment, Alan takes possession of the instrument which makes his studies easier and more profound.
When younger, Lucia had dedicated her career as a singer. She was known as the “Girl of Viola” having sung beside the couple’s Christian “Christian and Ralph”. With the birth of children she had to interrupt her musical career. But, destiny reserved a great surprise for her. With her son’s musical pledge, the two began a beautiful duet which they performed in nightclubs and musical establishments in Brazil.
“- It was funny, myself at 14 years old seated at the piano accompanying my mother. Playing Bossas, Boleros, Elis Regina, The Carpenters, etc… A lot of people approached me at the piano and said: -My son, when I heard this for the first time, God neither had ordered you for this world”!
The duet lasted a good long time. This however had to end when Alan started his musical production career. The arrangements and studio demanded more and more time which made it impossible to continue with the live shows. The farewell show was in the “Earth of the Light” in Visconde de M. in Rio de Janeiro which is a club famous for exhibiting respectful names in MPB music.
At 16 years of age, he leaves his family in Gyn and decided to live in Visconde in Rio de Janeiro. In a type of spiritual retreat, he absorbed himself with music and studies. In Visconde, he receives an invitation to participate in the band “Mantiqueira”, formed by guitarist Edgar, Roberto Granja on bass guitar, American Donald on drums and Argentinean Donato on percussion. According to Edgar the guitarist, when Alan left the group felt a sense of emptiness.
The time that he was in the band Mantigueira was marked the change of knowledge. “I was the young mascot of the group as the others were much older with a wide musical base of knowledge. They were true parents! I always thought the mark of the people that know a lot is shown in the humility of learning something and then passing it along to another. The band surprised me when they came to me for advice and to share ideas on musical concepts regarding the planning of the material in the rehearsals. After all, I was the little beginner. I learned a lot with those guys both as a professional musician and as person.
Alan would have been interested in producing and arranging even in such an unusual moment. I remember that my mind was full of arrangements, bass lines, percussion, strings, etc. The keyboard I had did not have the capability of putting all of this together simultaneously. The moment he got an old cassette recorder from Lucia, he recorded the percussion track using his ten fingers on the keyboard at same time to generate the drum and percussion tones like the bass drum, cymbals, snare drum, etc. Then returned to the tape deck to play piano on top of what he recorded. It was at that moment that this would become his current studio (MIX Audio and Video), which is known here and outside Brazil for excellent accomplished works. Of course today we use real recorders and microphones.
Still at age 16, he went to visit his father in Belo Horizonte. Alan and his father buy a multi-track keyboard (new innovation for that year) and with that Alan began his training and research where he starts to hear sounds in a different way. “- I heard the musical pieces in a fragmented way. I focused on each separate instrument and its subtle nuances. I tried to have an understanding of each instrument function. Then I was able to put these sounds and layers together in my keyboard to play in shows. This was an important part for my understanding with instrumentalists which I produce nowadays and I can use the same jargon with them in conversation. The curious fact of this keyboard: While I was still in Rio de Janeiro I meet a friend that turned me on to the new keyboard. He offered to help me to find this cool instrument. It turns out he was my father’s next door neighbor without me knowing”.
Before turning 17 years old, Alan receives an invitation to work with one of the largest music producers in the city. It was here that he came into contact with music production software. One year later, again he receives another invitation to command another studio. I remember when I arrived at the studio the owner said: “- I am going to show you your room”. When the guy opened the door I was waiting to see a chair, computer and table. But instead it was a submarine cabin gleaming with equipment, mixing board, lights and dividing glass (which divides the operator from the microphone room). I was pale when I seen all of this. I told the man that I was a pianist and did not have knowledge of all this equipment. The man responded: “-I’m leaving this all to you.” As such I swallowed dry, breathed deeply and went in. I will always be grateful for that chance.
With that, producer Alan Oliveira produces the CD “Paus” from Anchieta, Ceara. With these projects he gained a great cultural and sound knowledge. At the same time he makes his first contacts with the duo Andre and Andriano known for the famous work “Jeripoca.”
Still only 17, he divides his time with that producer and also free lance work with another. Through this route, Alan gets to know renowned Brazilian singer Gilberto Correia, which is a close friend of his today. Gilberto invites him to do an arrangement of a remake of the song “Vida Cigana”, nationally known and composed by “Geraldo Espindola” this would later be recorded by the samba group “R. Negra”. With that, Alan Oliveira enters a select group of professionals and his career gets a kick start.
At the same time, he receives an invitation to be the pianist for Georgia Brown. Georgia holds the record in Guinness Book of Records for the singer with the largest vocal range in the world. This was viewed on the “Jo Soares Show” in Brazil which gave an example of this amazing voice. Alan Oliveira does a show with this band in M. Garrincha, in Brazilia (Federal Capital) on the “Skol Rock” project where they played with other bands like Titas (The Titans). With the bleachers filled, they sit at their instruments, Alan at the piano, Chocolate at the drums (today Lulu Santos drummer), Sergin at the keyboards, Can Kanbay on guitar and Hulk on the bass. A little later the “Festival of Pop Music” commences and presents the ten top works and among those were “Tempo” (Time) in which Alan plays the keyboards besides Tom Oliveira and band.
In 2000, Alan starts to sing as well and performs in local night clubs and restaurants in Gyn such as Pancho Grill. Many young visitors drive to see the show to hear music performed like Dire Straits, Phil Collins, Skank, Lulu Santos, L. Urbana, Djavan, Cazuza, Eric Clapton, Jota Quest, U2, Tears for Fears, Ed Motta and others.
He receives an invitation to perform at Castro’s Park Hotel to play piano with such works like Frank Sinatra, Laura Pausini and Luis Miguel as well as instrumental pieces.
Later he begins playing keyboard and singing at the Flamboyant Shopping Center and is asked to perform on a regular bases in the house shows called “Saumama”.
He assumes the position of playing grand piano in the afternoon at Gyn Shopping for a period of one and half years. He learned a lot and cut his chops by playing constantly at that time.
Between the years 2000 through 2004, Alan Oliveira is involved in the production of the works of “Marcus Biancadinni” (instrumentalist that enchanted all in the interview on the Jo Soares Show). He also makes the production on the CD for pop singer “Roberto Quintanilla” (which was in the first place of top 20 for 3 months and record of msn’s requests with “Vozes” also very heard in Spain), as well as completing the production on the CD for pop singer “PH” (first place in the top 10 for 2 months with “Your Perfection”). Alan also, produces and arranges a track with “Franco Levine” and produces a homage for “Ponta Negra” in the state Rio Grande do Norte in partnership with singer “Lindomar Castilho”, the writer “Bariani Ortencio” and the group “Vocal 3”.
He receives an invitation of a group of students at The Federal University of Gyn (UFG) to give harmony classes and improvisation classes which develops this activity for some years. He works in parallel with computer assembly and installs systems for producers for 5 years. He abandons the activity with computers to the external market and concentrates on his private studio.
In 2004 Alan passes through one of the worst phases of his life. He passed through a time of extreme stress to the point of complete exhaustion to the point of dizziness. He went to the doctor to diagnose his medical issue which was diagnosed with acute accelerated stress. “I really don’t like to go back and think about this period of my life. I thought I was dying or something. For about 3 months in bed, everything just kept spinning. After this I had time to reflect, reform and reformulate all of my concepts and some of my best values came from this period of time. I learned how to delegate activities distributing responsibilities and trust more on the people that I work with. I realized that I had to return to my work but interject rest and leisure with that. I feel that in a sense, I was reborn”.
Alan Oliveira makes a recovery and comes back in great style producing in his studio for the North American singer “Mariah Carey” the song “I’ll Be Loving You Long Time”. And it ends up being voted on by internet users worldwide and was chosen among 3,000 competitors on of the 18 top producers.
At the end of 2004, he receives an invitation from the producer of “Mandra Filmes” to produce the dubbing of the movie “Fried Fish” for the movie festival “FICA” in Brazil. This work has earnings several prizes in festivals.
After this he spent a long time producing CD’s, Jingles for important companies in Brazil as well as movie tracks. He later returns to the performing live. In 2005 on piano he opens for J. Bosco’s show to mark the reopening of Bougainville Shopping Center in Gyn.
In 2006, he performs in concert in the “Rio Vermelho” theater. At the end of the concert people give a standing ovation for his performance.
Being the brother of an actress and involved with scoring movies, Alan becomes interested in 7a Art and begins directing and staring in the short film “Filomeno Vagarildo” which wins the best short film in a national contest at the festival by GVT (telephone company).
Alan works as an image editor and videographer for one year on a children’s TV show by “TV Cultura”.
Later he begins a movie production course with renowned professionals in movies by curricular selective process. The course is arranged by Daniela Arantes, well known producer having worked in films like “Central do Brasil” (with actress nominated for the Oscar Fernanda Montenegro); musical clip with Michael Jackson in Brazil as well as others.
He enrolls in a course for “Cinema Professional” by ICUMAM, with selective process of 30 best scripts for only 30 open slots. He receives important study material by filmmaker Di Moretti (which has won awards in film festivals like the one in Gramado, Brazil) and with well known producer S. Kieling.
In 2008, Alan begins his studies in theater at the acting school “Veiga Valle” and works under the command of Walquiria Batista (graduated in Scenic Arts at UFG); Body movement classes with professor and actress Lina Reston (graduated in Physical Education); Rudiments and theatrical theory by professor and actor Deidian Lucas (graduated in Scenic Arts at UFG and specialized in Art Philosophy at UEG/ IFITEG); Spoken voice by actor by professor Nilma Bittencourt (graduated in Phonoaudiology at UCG) and starts his studies based on Stanislavski. He acts for the first time in “Noble Bourgeois” of Moliere, interpreting the Mr. Jordain and starts to act in publicity films.
Still in 2008, Alan takes the “Course for Film Acting” with acclaimed cast preparer Sergio Penna that worked in films like “Bicho de Sete C” (which was prepared for actor Rodrigo Santoro), the film “Carandiru”; “Broder” (with actor Caio Blat); “Nem por Acaso” (again prepared for Rodrigo Santoro), “Bellini” “Chega de Saudade” and others.
He acts in Maxim Gorky’s drama where he interprets Old Luka. “- It was an honor to receive the task to interpret the character loaded with psycho-social situations like that of Luka. He was interpreted for the first time in Brazil in 1951 by Ziembinski next to Paulo Autran and a large cast where they present the whole social stamp of the Russian crisis of the first half the 20th century. It was my first senile character. Being Luka, the traveling Philosopher, consoler, solid spiritualist in himself, I had to lose all that body weight in excess in order to bring out that character of old age. I had to enter the world of Luka through a door that brought me interesting knowledge and respect of constructing a character from your own emotional insight.
By Alan, the knowledge of art through the eyes of the actor, facilitated his work in music such as sound engineering and production. “ -When we feel art by different sides and different points of view we begin to see a wider perspective of what is possible to do. In a movie soundtrack, for example, we start to perceive deep nuances by the actors that were not noticed before; a sense exists between the rational and emotional. Most importantly, when we acted, we cleansed the soul”.
Finally my dear readers, I tried here in this text to bring to you the most complete and honest Biography of Alan Oliveira, put together by collected information of friends, relatives and of course the artist. We are always updating innovations and discovering where he goes. We will soon have more on Alan!
8. VEGETARIANISMWhen I contacted Alan to schedule an interview and to collect information for the site, we agreed to meet at a restaurant suggested by him. While I waited, (I have an old habit of arriving ahead of schedule) I noticed that it was neither a sophisticated nor simple restaurant. I would say it had a warm, cozy feel to it.
Right on time I looked to the door and I saw Alan entering with a big smile on his face. This is something which remained in my mind throughout our simple and good humored chat. I realized it was a vegetarian restaurant when they began to serve us. The food was very tasty and we had a long chat about this. Soon after Alan commented:
“-My relatives tell a story of when I was a child, watching TV eating lettuce. It seemed more like a Koala Bear with his Eucalyptus leaves. I turned around, opened the refrigerator and came back with the greens. To tell you the truth, I never liked chewing or swallowing something that was once alive. Some friends questioned me by saying that eating vegetables is also eating something that was once alive. What really bothered me was the fact of the cruelty of the animals, which was removed in my mind by eating vegetables and fruit. In the case with fruits and vegetables we pick them when it is time, which I find more natural. We pick vegetables and fruits which come off naturally anyway. In this manner the root of life remains. In the case of an animal, it resists with suffering until its final gasp.
We need to start to think a little more. We just need to get out of the rat race. This reminds me a little of Hitler’s Holocaust that lined all of those people up for heading to the terror of death. They were all horrified because they were all human beings. However, in the case of animals, many ignore the true process of the agony involved in the meat market. The meat arrives to our beautiful table all nicely bagged up. But, prior to this, birds are jammed in cages so much that they can’t move, needless to mention that they are feed hormones to grow faster which are ingested by us and our children. Cows are being killed for beef and calves for their veal. Moreover, they say that horse meat has a kind of flavor, that rabbit meat has other delicious flavor... All of this just to satisfy the palette. One day I was walking down through the corridors of a supermarket, when I observed that on the meat shelves there was a poster of a smiling cow, happy with life. Do we buy meat or the cow’s smiling face?
Imagine ourselves inside a cage. A person arrives and removes your son or daughter. They separate you, leave with your child to never return, end of story. I really like the scene on “The Planet of the Apes” which shows the monkeys to be superior to the humans. A girl monkey arrives and she chooses a human child saying: “- I want that one, that one!” The human girl’s suffering and that of her parents cause a shock factor in this inverse context in many people. Speaking of films, I always suggest that you see a documentary “A Carne Fraca” (“The Weak Meat”) about the treatment and process of the meat packing business.
Let’s talk about rabbit, for God’s sake; there are people that test beauty products in their eyes because they possess a very strong sensitivity. If the animals’ eyes can withstand the product, then great, we can sell it.
Some say that we would be weak and malnourished without meat. However, every year my exams come back to me with great results. Others say that results are shown over a long period of time. No matter what, we will die one way or another. Do you think that with some years to come that I can relax with the suffering of other beings? No, not at all. I know a lot of Vegetarians and all of them have a great life without any problems. And many times they live better and longer.
I do most things based on facts. The human being is evolving and with this no longer shows up with prey in its mouth as it was before. One day I heard that we have an intestine larger than the animal that eats meat. I wonder if that would be for taking advantage of digesting more of the nutrients of a vegetable diet. I think that eating meat must have been the course of just some accident. It seems that long ago, there must have been a shortage of fruits and vegetables, we saw felines eating fluffy white rabbits, and we copied them.
I try to moderate myself without having to convince everybody to pretend to be boring. When I get invited to barbeques I try to escape. But if I have to go, I take my own onions and cheese to grill… (laughing).
We do bad things for ourselves. To maintain so many cows, we have deforested thousands of acres to create pastures larger and larger. The Methane produced from this cows contributes to the problems with our atmosphere. It’s all so senseless. It seems that humans like to suffer. I’m in the habit of getting around a lot by bicycle because the streets are congested more and more with cars. If it rains, I put on a raincoat and leave. Things that before that took me 50 minutes by car, I can now be there in 15 minutes via bicycle. During my ride, I notice lonely people yelling and honking. But, glued to the steering wheels they think, “- I’ll just go in MY CAR”. Leave the car in the garage people. Ride a bicycle. It does well for the body and you arrive faster without polluting. (laughter)
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Alan Oliveira participates in a group that helps people in need where they assist others, distribute food and clothes as well as make personal consultations. He told us a little about what it motivated him in becoming involved this work:
“- The universe appears to calculate everything with a very harmonious symmetry. Before revisiting my nightmare again, when I got away from my work, I was a person that only thought about me. I could only focus on my objectives. I did not notice people or even myself. When the doctors asked me to get away from my work I only rested about. This is when I was forced to find something meaningful in life.”
“I remember that I started in a very uninteresting format. But, when I went back to work, I felt an extreme necessity to continue with charitable work. I turned out to give me pleasure. Today, I am grateful for this complicated time. Without this I would not have had this chance to discover the people as I see today. I really believe that something bad turned to good.”
WE CAN WIN THE ANIMAL TORTURE
IN THE WORLD
"We have to be attentive to what we use and what we wear. Recently, secret agents made a film investigating secret leather goods farms. The skinners catch the animals such as foxes, minks, rabbits and others. Then they throw them on the floor and beat them with metal bars, breaking their bones and stomping on them and not always killing them. They hang them and remove their skins while they are still alive, hopelessly kicking and fighting during this torture.
When they remove the entire skin, from paws to face, they throw their skinless bloody bodies on piles of other animals that still breathe for about 5 to 10 minutes. One of those poor creatures manages to look up at the Cinematographer from the pile and then falls back down amid the suffering.
Meanwhile, the other animals observed were perplexed in their cages, chewing their members compulsively and throwing themselves against the bars of the cage with psychosis and induced anxiety. Without having said, these creatures endured cold nights, hot sun, rains, etc.
How can we help? Just doing your part will help. We have to be conscience of what we wear. For this, I always wear shoes and clothes made of cloth. Let’s think about the animals as if we were them. Imagine if it were you in those cages.
Think about it...”
